TAT CHATS
Aftercare
Go home and wash area in warm, soapy water
Airdry or pat dry with paper towel
Avoid antiseptic creams and direct sun exposure
Regularly monitor for signs of infection
Getting a new tattoo is super exciting, but proper aftercare is key to ensuring it heals perfectly. At our Mooloolaba tattoo studio, we emphasize the importance of effective tattoo aftercare to prevent skin infections and maintain the quality and appearance of your healed ink.
Right after your tattoo, your artist will cover it with a protective bandage. It is ideal that you head home to clean the area, but if you’re out and about, just keep that protective film secured in place to prevent bacteria entering the area.
Once removed, it’s crucial to clean the area with mild soap and water, then allow to airdry for 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you don’t have time to airdry your new tattoo, gently pat dry with clean paper towel. Avoid using a bath towel where possible as they can harbour bacteria and dirt, and can also leave behind lint which will irritate the tattooed area.
For aftercare, avoid using antiseptic creams (like the Bepanthen Antiseptic version) as they can irritate the skin and interfere with the healing process. Instead, opt for soothing balms or ointments (we sell a great aftercare product in the shop!) specifically designed for tattoos. These options help keep the skin moisturized, protect against infection, and promote healing.
On the Sunshine Coast, we all know how damaging the sun can be on our skin. It is really important that you don’t expose your new tattoo to too much direct sunlight during the healing process as the skin is a fresh, open wound - extra susceptible to sunburn. Getting your new tattoo sunburnt will likely cause blistering, fading and cracking, irreversibly damaging the design.
Keep an eye on your tattoo for signs of infection, such as red rings around the area, prolonged swelling or fever. If you notice these symptoms, seek medical advice. With the right aftercare options and avoiding harmful products like antiseptic creams, your tattoo will heal safely, preserving its vibrant color and detail.
If you have any questions about aftercare, pop in and see us at 13/121 Mooloolaba Esplanade, Mooloolaba and we’ll be happy to provide guidance to ensure your new ink remains immaculate!

3. classic tattoo history: the lady head
The "lady head" tattoo is a staple of classic tattooing and holds a revered place in traditional tattoo art. This iconic design, known for its bold lines and vibrant colors, often depicts elegant women with detailed hairstyles, makeup, and sometimes accessories like roses or headdresses. It originated during the early 20th century, gaining popularity among sailors, soldiers, and tattoo enthusiasts alike.
The lady head tattoo often symbolizes femininity, beauty, or the memory of a loved one, and it is still a powerful statement piece for those who appreciate vintage art. It was often adorned by lonely sailors, to remind them of a loved-one left behind while out at sea.
Sailor Jerry have collated a fun album of classic tattoo designs, including the lady head, that you can explore here and dive deeper into the rich history of traditional tattoos that have stood the test of time. Whether you’re a fan of old-school ink or seeking timeless inspiration, the lady head tattoo continues to captivate tattoo lovers across generations.
